What can I recycle in those blue cans?
Going green, being sustainable, protecting the environment...remember the 3 R's? Whatever you would like to call it, I'm all for eco-consciousness. When I was younger, we didn't have the big blue recycling bins, so my folks took it upon themselves to recycle what they could. We would crush cans, save the 5 liter bottles of pop, and every so often head down to the recycling place and get a few bucks. It was a cool practice to learn and it may have planted into our growing brains the value of recycling.
These days it is extremely easy to recycle a variety of different containers - call EDCO (or go online), ask them for a blue recycling bin, and start throwing stuff in. When they first began this program, I believe there were only a few items that could be recycled, or at least only a few that I knew about. Now you can throw an array of different packages, containers, and materials into this big blue container to be picked up by the recycling man. Some things you may not know about include aluminium foil, any plastic container marked with a 1-7 encircled with the recycle symbol, and paper egg cartons. So, fill that thing up. Usually when trash/ recycle day comes, the blue bin from our place is overloaded. I know I'm not saving the world with this practice, but it is a mindset and a step in the right direction.
A few caveats to the big blue recycling containers. Try and make sure that you are only throwing in what can be recycled. No batteries or light bulbs. No plastic bags, styrofoam packing peanuts, or electronics - here is some info on what to do with those things.
